Holidays or Feast Days
It is important to note that ministers often recorded dates by the
ecclesiastical calendar. This means that every Sunday of the
year was named after a relationship to a significant religious
event or Feast Day. The ecclesiastical year began, not on 1
Jan, but on the first Sunday in Advent. This is the fourth
Sunday before Christmas. This means that special care needs
to be taken when recording dates in December, that the correct
year is recorded.
There are two types of feast days, Fixed Feast Days (those
happening on the same date every year), and Movable Feast
Days (those that do not happen on the same day every year).
These dates could be recorded in Latin or Norwegian so both
are given in the list below.
Note: to determine the month and day of movable feast days
requires special tables (PDF, 1784 KB).
Instructions for special tables: Look for the year, then select the
number corresponding to the Gregorian or Julian calendar.
Check the page showing dates the calendars changed to find
the year of change for the country you are researching. Take
this number to the Calendar of Feast Days (following year
chart), find the feast day, and move across the chart until you
are in the column of the number found on the year chart. This
will give you your month and day. Be sure to pay attention to
the notes at the bottom of each page. This chart was compiled
by Henry E. Christiansen.
